2-Mentality
(Your attitude determines your altitude)
A study by the Department of Epidemiology at Yale University discovered that those who have a positive perception of aging can expect to live 7.5 years longer than those with a negative outlook. It also reveals that people over 50 with this positive perspective on life feel 20 years younger on a self-perception scale and also look more than 20 years younger on an outsiders-perception scale.
Very few are able to comprehend the true power that our mentality carries throughout our life. The good news is that we don’t have to fight this battle alone. We chose mentality as the second step for a reason. How you think will not only build the motivation needed to conquer your life, but it also grants the opportunity to help those you love along the way. Here are a few things you can do to build your own mentality, and reasons why it is so important to overcome negative thinking.
It wasn’t until recently that scientist have grasped the true power that we all have hidden in our head. The thoughts we have take almost complete control over what we do, who we are, and how we feel. You must believe that you are capable of anything you put your mind to and always keep a positive outlook during those negative moments.
When beginning a new step within Project Million we strongly encourage putting the entire family on the program. Like I said in the first section; it is a lifestyle we are working towards, not a diet. No matter the age of those in your family, everyone will benefit from these changes and it's found that it takes 12 months to develope a new lifestyle so it's imporatnt to start now. When the entire family goes at it together this brings about a lot of support from each other. Starting this healthier lifestyle can be very difficult in the beginning stages, but when there is support, the burden can be lifted dramatically. This is especially true when there are loved ones behind you. They not only want to see you succeed, but also care about your health just as much, if not more than you do. We all know how sad it is to see a family member struggling with health problems. Understand that you’re not only doing this for yourself but for them as well.
Here is a push for those of you who have always wanted to start attending religious services but have never taken the opportunity to do so. The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine published an article that shows attending a religious service once a week is as beneficial to your health as being on a moderate workout program. To put a percentage value to it; attending a religious service regularly makes you 20% less likely to die at any given point in time. It also decreases your chance of dying within the next 7 years by 35%. Not only is religion a great place to build yourself, but it’s also a prime location to find support for any situation you are struggling with. Whether it is from God, or from those you meet, there will find support. You will surround yourself with high spirited people who share similar beliefs to your own, and you will also have God on your side.
The most important factor for mentality is self-motivation. Give yourself a reason to begin everything you do and make it personal. Even if it’s something as simple as explaining “Why do I get up in the morning?” If your alarm clock is now your enemy, write out the reasons why you should look forward to that sound each morning. When writing out a goal you should also write out the motivation behind it. This will cause you to push further and harder in order to achieve any goal you have. The more reasons you have and the more descriptive you make them, the better your chances are of success. An example could be as simple as this
- I want to lose 20 pounds by the end of the year and keep it off
REASONS: To provide the energy to play with my kids - look better for my
spouse - give me the health benefits that I have been looking for - add years
to my life so I can see my children grow up and play with my grandchildren - etc…
A simple step to begin this section is bringing out that scale hidden in the closet. Put a sticky note above the scale with your desired weight on it and then weigh yourself daily. Along with the weight you can write the reason for that weight even if you don’t display it. Put it in a place you will see it often. The Annals of Behavioral Medicine stated that those who weigh themselves on a daily basis weigh 17 pounds less on average than those who don’t. The study also shows that 44% of those who succeed in keeping off weight will weigh themselves on a daily basis.
It is also important not to attempt much at once. People are creatures of habit and overwhelming yourself with change can cause failed attempts at improvement. It’s completely understandable to start slow. Start by adding changes you know you can handle. I built this site using as subtle changes as possible to avoid that overwhelming sensation. Keep a steady pace, don’t move too quickly, but at the same time be sure to challenge yourself. Refuse to move anywhere but up!
Finally we are here to help. Ask questions whenever you are stuck in a rut or unsure of what step to take next. If we get the question enough times then we will also realize it is important enough to put on the FAQ section of the website for everyone to see.

Completing step 2
- Add anywhere from 0-15 years onto your Life Expectancy.
- For those over 50: Be prepared to see drastic changes. Look and feel as
much as 20 years younger.
