Fast Food and School Lunches
(Working in perfect harmony to produce the heaviest country on Earth)

I have said it before and I will say it again, schools could not fail more miserably at creating health minded children. Some states have no requirement to teach health education to high school students and even those with mandated health studies, there is still no class time or knowledge requirements for graduation. A majority of high school students graduate high school with less than 40 hours of health education from kindergarten through 12th grade (little over 1.5 hours per semester). Schools also have extremely inadequate lunches, recieve financial benefits from medicating their students, and often feed students treats as a reward for doing well which creates very negative habits. Moving back onto topic; children are receiving less and less health attention as society moves forward.

Obesity rates         Our students may be striving for academics, but we are losing ourselves in the process and placing money on top of our personal happiness and self-satisfaction. Yet in reality, isn’t that all that life is truly about, being happy? Currently in America; one in three children will develop diabetes, a third of children are overweight, and 25% of kids between 10-17 are obese. With 80% of obese children never overcoming this disability and nearly half the country becoming overweight in their lifetime, there isn’t much hope for those who don’t understand the influence health has on their life. This is the first generation in history with a shorter life expectancy than their parents. It's time for a real change. The mentality of health must be established early on in a child if it is to be implemented throughout his or her life.

Today 1 in every 4 Americans will eat at a fast food restaurant. There have been two primary risks associated with fast food. That is obesity and diabetes. Both can easily take off 5 years from life and can also lead to many alternative health ailments down the road. Fast food is also filled with chemicals that alter brain functions and lead to an extremely unhealthy body on top of just the weight gained. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute shows that after a 15 year study those who ate fast food at least twice a week weighed 10 pounds more and had twice the chance of being diabetic.

Health risks           The average American currently drinks 56 gallons of soda a year (approx 70,000 calories or 21 pounds of fat). America also has French fries as its most eaten vegetable (44,000 calories or 12.5 pounds of fat). For many American, we go into our local fast food restaurant and capitalize on the savings we get by buying the 'meal deal.' This almost always results in French fries, soda, and a greasy meal filled with chemicals and sugars. Using the displayed picture we can see that there is almost no meal which provides adequate nutrients for the consumer. In fact, the health risks associated with a fast food diet of 5 or more meals a week, will result in almost the same health risks as being a regular smoker.

Thus far, you can see that cutting out fast food from the most general perspective will reduce weight by around 30 pounds in a single year. This doesn’t even begin to assess the chemicals added to the food, the artificial sugars in the drinks, the added sugar to almost every product (including bread and meat), and the ripping apart of substances and putting them back together in order to produce food that can be eaten more quickly and in higher quantities, etc. This site is about the basics. If you want to learn more, which we greatly encourage you to do, follow the links or recommended videos/books to help build a greater mentality against fast food consumption.
